A suspected 20mm shell found on the beach at Seaton Carew near Hartlepool was destroyed in a controlled explosion. An Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team attended the scene after a member of the public found the item at the popular beach. The EOD team moved the shell to an area of sand dunes before carrying out the controlled explosion.
Often fired from aircraft guns or machine gun posts during World War Two (WWII), 20mm cannon shells are fairly common finds along Britain’s beaches.
