50kg German UXB Found Near Kings Hill in Kent

A 50kg German Unexploded Bomb (UXB) was found in a ragstone quarry at Kings Hill near West Malling in Kent.  The bomb was discovered during topsoil stripping prior to quarrying work.

An Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team attended site and took advantage of the natural protection afforded by the quarry to carry out a controlled explosion in situ.

The location of the find is in close proximity to the former Royal Air Force (RAF) West Malling airfield, which was on the front line during the Battle of Britain.  As such, the airfield was heavily bombed by the Luftwaffe on several occasions, resulting in bombing overspill in the areas surrounding the airfield.
