An Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was called to Pakefield Beach in Lowestoft by the Coastguard yesterday after a live ammunition cache was washed up.
There are numerous potential historic sources of Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) in the area, including practice firing ranges, coastal gun batteries, minefields and crashed aircraft, all of which have contributed UXO to the marine environment.
The offshore current and sediment movement patterns around Pakefield are also such that the probability of UXO migrating from the sea onto nearby beaches is a relatively high one, making such finds common.
