Yet another WWII shell has been found at the site of the former Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield, which is undergoing redevelopment as an Olympic Legacy Park. This follows on from last week’s discovery of an empty artillery shell on the same site and an earlier find in April, both of which required attendance by an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit.
An EOD team is on site once again and further disruption has been caused to the road and tram networks in the region. The site was occupied by a steel works engaged in manufacturing munitions during WWII and it is probable that more of these items remain buried.
Whilst all the shells appear to be empty, the site developers cannot take any chances and therefore the Police must be informed. This is clearly causing significant delays to site works and emphasises the importance of getting a thorough risk assessment and mitigation strategy established prior to ground works beginning.
