Several residential streets in Woodford Green were cordoned off after the discovery of a WWII-era shell on a building site. Initially thought to be of German origin, arriving Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) officers indicated that the item was a field artillery shell.
The suspicion is that the shell – which was free from explosives – was formerly a collectors item, before later being buried in a back garden for the sake of convenience. Fortunately the item was harmless and was removed by the EOD team, allowing the safety cordon to be lifted and the excitement to dissipate.
