Boer War Mortar Fished from River Aire in Leeds

Roads in Leeds city centre were closed for several hours after the discovery of a suspected 18-pound mortar thought to date from the Boer War (1899-1902).

An Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team came to assess the device after it had been pulled from the River Aire by magnet fishermen.  The EOD team placed the device into a sandbag-filled truck before removing it to a local park for a controlled explosion.
