British Parachute Mines Found in Waters off Guernsey

Two suspected British Parachute Mines have been found in waters off Guernsey. The 870lb devices are thought to have been dropped in 1944 to prevent German Naval vessels leaving harbour and interfering with ‘Operation Overlord’, the D-Day invasions of Normandy.  Guernsey was German-occupied at the time, having been invaded in 1940.

One of the mines has been destroyed in a controlled underwater explosion and the second is likely to share the same fate once moved to a safe area by an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team.
