There was a surprise discovery at Loweswater in Cumbria, after a man found six sticks of gelatine dynamite and detonators more than a century old stashed in a shed on his property. Wrapped in newspaper dating from 1901, the devices were assessed as viable by an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team from Catterick.
After burying the dynamite in a nearby field, and covering it with 20 odd bags of sand, the EOD team undertook a controlled explosion.
It is thought that the dynamite may have been for use in quarrying activities around the turn of the last century.
