Controlled Explosion for WWII Shell Found on Brean Beach
An unexploded World War Two (WWII) shell was found on Brean beach near Burnham-on-Sea in Somerset by a metal detectorist. An Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was informed but due to incoming tides the device could not be dealt with immediately.
After a couple of days’ delay, favourable tides washed away the excess sand covering the shell, allowing the EOD team to destroy it in a controlled explosion.
The whole coastline along Brean was used as part of the Stert Flats bombing range during WWII and Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) is regularly washed up or exposed during stormy conditions.
