Controlled Explosion of 250kg UXB Takes Place at Kingston University

A controlled explosion of a 250kg German bomb found at Kingston University shattered windows and damaged houses in the local vicinity. The bomb could not be safely removed to a more remote location and consequently demolition was required in situ.

Despite some preventative blast mitigation being put in place by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, localised damage occurred. 1,500No. residents were evacuated and local schools closed as a large safety cordon was put in place prior to the operation.

The Kingston area officially recorded 86No. High Explosive (HE) bomb falls during World War Two, a relatively low number for London.  This particular bomb, however, was one of those missed.
