Controlled Explosion for WWI Grenade at Royal Troon

It has been revealed that an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team carried out a controlled explosion of a WWI-era grenade at Royal Troon golf course shortly before Christmas.

The grenade was uncovered by greenkeepers cutting turf between the first and second holes, and prompted an evacuation of part of the course.

Like many similar facilities, Royal Troon was used for military training by the Army during WWI. Their wide, open spaces and copious bunkers made golf courses a rather convenient practice area for new recruits.
