Fisherman Prompts Evacuation After Hauling Mortar From Loch Arkaig

A fisherman caused panic after he decided to bring home a WWII-era mortar that he had hauled out of Loch Arkaig.  The device was left in a neighbour’s garden (not maliciously) and they fortunately determined its likely identify before calling the Police.

The Police evacuated the local street as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team from the Royal Navy was mobilised.  The EOD team removed the mortar to a safe location where it was destroyed in a controlled explosion.

The land around Loch Arkaig was used as a training area by Commando forces between 1942 and 1945.
