Fisherman Trawls up Depth Charge off North Ayrshire

A fisherman got a pre-Christmas surprise when he hauled in a WWII-era depth charge off Largs on the North Ayrshire coast.

The Mark 7 device was initially thought to be a boiler until a sinister smell of explosives alerted the fisherman to its true origin.

A 700m exclusion zone was put in place around the vessel as a Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was mobilised. The EOD team removed the depth charge and towed it one mile out to sea where they undertook a controlled explosion.
