German Parachute Mine Safely Destroyed off Essex Coast

A 1,000kg German Parachute Mine has been destroyed in a controlled explosion, several days after being found at the site of a 17th century shipwreck.  The huge device – dropped against both land and marine targets by the Luftwaffe during WWII – was discovered by divers at the wreck of London, a 76-gun 17th century vessel lying in the Thames Estuary near Southend.

A Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team carefully freed the mine and towed it out to sea off Shoeburyness where it was safely destroyed.
