An Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was called to an industrial estate in Kirkby near Liverpool after a suspected hand grenade was found. Several premises were evacuated whilst the device was dealt with.
The industrial estate in question comprises part of a former Royal Ordnance Factory (ROF). ROF Kirkby was designated as Filling Factory No. 7 during WWII and filled 10% of all British ammunition used in the conflict. In 1944, two explosions resulted in more than 4,000 tons of ordnance being buried at the ROF, which was closed in 1946.
