Live Shell Blown up at Alum Bay

A member of the public found an historic shell on the beach at Alum Bay, Isle of Wight and alerted The Needles Coastguard Rescue Team. The Coastguard subsequently mobilised an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team who confirmed the shell to be live. They destroyed it in a controlled explosion.

The promontory at Alum Bay was the location of a coastal artillery battery during World War Two (WWII), designed to protect the approaches to the Solent and the important naval facilities at Portsmouth. Several other coastal defences have been located in the area over the course of several centuries and UXO dating from a range of periods is periodically washed up.
