A Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was called to Saunton Beach in North Devon after a live smoke grenade was found in a public bin. The origin of the device is unknown, although the smoking trash can unsurprisingly drew the attention of passers-by.
The military regularly train on nearby Braunton Burrows and it is thought that the grenade may have been transferred by a member of the public onto the beach at Saunton. Needless to say, any suspect device should be left well alone if encountered.
The EOD team undertook a controlled explosion of the grenade.
