Houses have been evacuated in two parts of Devon as WWII ordnance was found in separate locations in Plymouth and Exmouth.
Residents surrounding Millbay Road, Plymouth have been asked to evacuate after a German SC50 bomb was uncovered at a building site on Wednesday. A 100m cordon was put in place, and later widened to 400m.
In a separate incident, a 400m cordon was established in Exmouth Marina after a piece of “suspected unexploded ordnance” was dredged from the water, noted to be 3-4ft in length and 2ft in diameter. The evacuation zone includes 2000 properties and 5000 people, with Devon and Cornwall Police declaring a “major incident”.
Residents and drivers have been asked to avoid both impacted areas as bomb disposal teams deal with the discoveries.
This is an ongoing incident and we will provide further updates when available.
There have been several notable WWII UXO finds in Devon in recent years, including the discovery of a WWII bomb in Plymouth in 2024.
