In what is becoming a constantly repeating trend, another item of ordnance has been found by a bait digger along the seafront at Southend. The Coastguard – rather experienced in such matters in this part of the UK – have secured the site and will no doubt be awaiting an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team to arrive.
There are numerous sources of Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) hazard off the Southend coast, including former practice firing ranges, WWII aircraft crashes, jettisoned bombs and shells. Given this, and the prevailing currents, UXO is regularly washed up on the beach and provides a potential hazard for those looking for bait.
