A suspected 3″ mortar was found on farmland at Leysdown on the Isle of Sheppey. The Police secured the area before mobilising an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, which was due to carry out a controlled explosion. A second item – possibly a smoke canister – was also found.
Mortars remain regular finds across the UK, being one of the most commonly-used infantry devices. Either as a result of military training exercises, unauthorised disposal, or simply a local resident discarding a souvenir, there is the potential to encounter such devices in almost any rural area or forest.
