An unexploded mortar was found in a field adjacent to the River Ribble near Avenham Park, Preston by a metal detectorist. The item was disposed of in a controlled explosion by an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team.
This incident follows on from similar finds last year, when two other mortars were found in almost the same location. The discoveries hint at a former military use for the area, with almost any area of open ground a potential site for ad hoc training activities during the World Wars.
