A member of the public found a suspected WWII mortar shell on the beach at Tentsmuir Forest near Tayport in Fife. An Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was mobilised, prompting the evacuation of beachgoers so that the device could be assessed. After a security cordon was established, a controlled explosion was undertaken.
Such finds in the area are fairly frequent. Tentsmuir Forest and its adjacent beaches were extensively used for bombing and infantry training during WWII.
