Mortar shells have been found during excavation works at Risley Moss near Warrington. After Police put in place a security cordon, an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was mobilised and they dealt with the devices.
During WWII, the vast Royal Ordnance Factory (ROF) Risley complex was located in the area. It filled a huge variety of ordnance, from small arms ammunition to high explosive bombs and most things in between. The factory also had proofing ranges to test ordnance and burning grounds to destroy defective munitions and waste.
