Naval Projectile Found at Wembury Point

A member of the public found a suspected naval projectile on National Trust property at Wembury Point near Plymouth. The Coastguard were called and they duly mobilised an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, which is based at nearby Devonport.

The EOD team put in place a security cordon before removing the device. It was due to be destroyed in a controlled explosion nearby.

Wembury Point was an important defensive site from the early 20th century, when a powerful coastal artillery battery was constructed there in 1905-6. This was designed to defend Plymouth’s important dockyards from enemy naval attack. The battery was upgraded during both WWI and WWII and was only disarmed in 1957.
