Ordnance Found on Mappleton Beach at Former Firing Range

Volunteer beach cleaners found more than plastic over the weekend at Mappleton in East Yorkshire.  Several practice bombs and other ordnance were encountered along the coast, which was previously the location of a Royal Air Force (RAF) firing range.

Over 1,000 similar items were found at the beach in 2012 after being exposed by a landslide.  Fifteen controlled explosions were required over the course of several days to dispose of the items.

On this occasion the task wasn’t quite so daunting for the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, although the incident is a reminder of the hazard provided at former military training areas.
