Spigot Mortar Found on Cornish Beach

An unexploded spigot mortar bomb was found on the beach at Hayle in Cornwall. After the Coastguard and Police were informed, an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team from the Royal Navy was mobilised.

With the light fading, the EOD team decided to come back the following morning to carry out a controlled explosion.

Spigot mortars were often issued to the Home Guard as anti-tank weapons, and could come in 14lb and 20lb variants. They were filled with high explosive.
