Spigot Mortar Round Found Near Plymouth

13.09.2016A WWII spigot mortar round was discovered by a local historian near Plymouth whilst he was in search for a secret wartime bunker. The man was hunting one of the operational bases of the notorious Auxiliary Unit, ‘Churchill’s Secret Army’. The Auxiliary Units were made up of guerrilla troops trained in sabotage and assassination in case of an enemy invasion.  Sites used by these Units were top secret and many locations are still unknown.

After realising the nature of his discovery, the historian contacted the Police who informed an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team.

The EOD team removed the device to the Penlee Point and, as a precautionary measure, destroyed it in a controlled explosion.
