Suspected Depth Charge Found Off Guernsey Destroyed in Controlled Explosion
A suspected depth charge found in the sea off St Peter Port, Guernsey has been destroyed in a controlled explosion.
Recreational divers found the device near the Queen Elizabeth II Marina. It is thought to have been an American-made Mark 54 lightweight torpedo depth charge containing approximately 100 kilos of explosives.
A Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team put in place a 200m safety cordon for maritime traffic before safely detonating the device at low tide.
Guernsey, like the other Channel Islands, was invaded by the Nazis during WWII and occupied for the majority of the war.
