An Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team is expected to carry out a controlled explosion on a suspected mortar bomb found on the beach at Winterton-on-Sea, near Great Yarmouth. The device was found washed up by a member of the public and the Coastguard have put in place a safety cordon.
The Winterton area was used for military training during WWII and several practice firing ranges were established off its coastline. The discovery of the mortar, therefore, is unsurprising, particularly given the recent stormy weather which will have dislodged items of Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) from the seabed across the UK.
