Brixham Harbour was closed off after a suspected torpedo was brought in by a fishing trawler. A combined effort between the Police, Coastguard and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team ensured that the 1,000lb device could be towed back out to sea where it was destroyed in a controlled explosion.
Considerable quantities of ordnance remain on the seabed in the English Channel and it is not uncommon for fishing vessels to haul in remnants from wartime military activity. Whilst smaller items such as shells and bullets are often dredged up, such large devices as this are less common.
