A live WWII mortar bomb was unearthed on a building site near a school in Laindon, Essex. A safety cordon was put in place by Police as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was mobilised from Colchester.
On confirming the viability of the device, the EOD team removed it to a nearby field for a controlled explosion.
The origin of the mortar is unclear, as the area was already developed for housing by the time of WWII. It is possible that it was a souvenir brought home by a former resident of the area.
