An unexploded mortar was destroyed in a controlled explosion after being found by a metal detectorist near the beach at Smeale on the Isle of Man. After the Police were informed, the Coastguard put in place a security cordon overnight before the arrival of an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team. The EOD team carried out a safe detonation.
The northern coast of the Isle of Man was extensively used during WWII for bombing and gunnery practice, in addition to military training activities.
