Unexploded Mortar Found at RAF Waddington

raf-waddingtonA suspected unexploded mortar has been found at RAF Waddington during excavation works to upgrade the runway. It follows other recent discoveries of Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) at the airfield, including 11.5lb practice bombs last year.

An Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team has been mobilised to the airfield to deal with the latest device, with nearby roads closed as a precaution.

Waddington has had an airfield since WWI, when the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) established a flight training aerodrome. The airfield was upgraded during WWII, becoming an important station for Bomber Command.
