Unexploded Shell Destroyed Near Severn Crossing

An unexploded shell was destroyed in a controlled explosion by a Royal Navy EOD team after being found at Charston Sands, near the Severn Crossing. The Chepstow Coastguard responded to an initial call-out before forwarding the task to the EOD team.

A safety cordon was put in place whilst the UXO was prepared for demolition.

The Severn Estuary was heavily-defended during WWII, with numerous Anti-Aircraft and coastal batteries established along its shores. There were also practice firing ranges operated by the Army and Navy.
