Unexploded Shell Found at Neath

An Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team undertook a controlled explosion after a shell was found at a metal recycling plant at Neath Abbey Wharf, South Wales.

The device was removed to marshland at Jersey Marine where it could be safely destroyed.

South Wales was a major centre for the demilitarisation of unused ordnance at the end of World War Two (WWII). Explosives were removed from shell casings which were then used in the region’s smelting works.  Occasionally, live items ended up in the metal disposal stream.
