An unexploded shell found on Pagham Beach in West Sussex has been destroyed in a controlled explosion by an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team. After the Coastguard were alerted by a member of the public to two suspect devices, the EOD team confirmed that one was potentially live and fuzed and decided that an in situ disposal was necessary.
Pagham Harbour was used as a bombing and air-to-ground range by the Royal Air Force (RAF) during World War Two (WWII), and offshore currents can lead to UXO washing up on nearby beaches.
