The beach at Frinton near Clacton-on-Sea was closed after an unexploded shell was found by children. Fortunately, some observant bystanders realised the potential severity of the situation and alerted the authorities, who got the Coastguard to enforce an evacuation of the beach.
An Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was called and, having assessed the shell as live, they removed the device to a safe location for a controlled explosion.
