Unexploded Shell the Latest UXO Find on Gower Beach

As beaches begin to return to full capacity with the easing of the lockdown, expect more Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) finds. The Oxwich Coastguard team has warned the public to be vigilant when coming across suspicious items that may be ordnance.

It follows the discovery of an unexploded shell on the Gower Peninsula by a beach walker. UXO is regularly found in the area, which was used for military training during World War Two (WWII), including the establishment of coastal firing ranges. Whilst the MoD undertakes a periodic sweep of the area, storms and tidal movements regularly result in UXO being dislodged and washed up onto nearby beaches.

In this instance, an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was mobilised to deal with the shell. It took two attempts, but they eventually destroyed it in a controlled explosion.
