An Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team received two call-outs over the bank holiday weekend to an Angus beach near the Barry Buddon Training Camp after Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) was discovered washed-up.
A member of the public initially flagged a suspect find to the Coastguard, whose officers secured the device overnight before it could be inspected by an EOD team. A controlled explosion was undertaken the following day.
Further ordnance was then spotted near the high tide mark and will require an additional inspection.
There are conflicting reports over the nature of the UXO finds on the beach. Some suggest that a mortar was discovered, and others that it was a larger piece of ordnance. Perhaps it was both! Barry Buddon, near Carnoustie, has been used as an army training facility for decades and the discovery of UXO on the nearby beaches is not uncommon.
