UXO Found at Scrapyard in St Helens

A piece of Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) was found at a scrapyard being developed for housing in St Helens.  The exact type of device is unknown, being variously reported as an artillery shell and a bomb.

A security cordon was put in place by the Police, resulting in road closures and the evacuation of several nearby houses and businesses.  An Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team subsequently attended the site and removed the device.

It is not uncommon for old shell cases to be found at scrapyards and recycling centres, either due to demilitarised ordnance being sold as scrap or as a result of local residents trying to rid themselves of unwanted souvenirs.
