Two items of Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) have been found on the beach along the Holderness Coast. The first item was found near Skipsea, the second to the south of Mappleton.
The coast in this region has historically been used for practice bombing and air-to-ground firing and UXO finds are fairly common. Indeed, in July 2012 coastal erosion caused a major landslip at Mappleton, exposing more than 1,000No. items of UXO, including practice bombs, mortars, rockets, shells and grenades. An Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team carried out an initial 15No. controlled explosions to destroy the most volatile devices before removing the remainder in a progressive operation.
The public are being warned to keep clear of the beaches until an EOD team can assess and safely deal with the latest discoveries.
