Victorian-Era Howitzer Shell Found at Hurst Spit

A suspected Victorian-era Howitzer shell was washed up on the beach at Hurst Spit near Milford-on-Sea.  A 100m exclusion zone around the device was established after it was discovered by a member of the public near the high water mark.

The shell, thought to have been a practice munition fired from nearby Hurst Castle, was removed by a Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team.

The recent stormy weather in the UK is thought to have been responsible for this particular UXO find and no doubt extra vigilance for suspect items will be required on Britain’s beaches over the next few weeks.
