A cache of WWI hand grenades was removed from an industrial estate in Forest Town, Mansfield, after an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team had initially been brought to the site on a false alarm. The discovery of a suspect package had forced the evacuation of nearby buildings before the EOD team found the device to be an electrician’s belt.
Having spotted the EOD team at the estate, a knowledgeable local resident informed them about a cache of WWI grenades buried nearby. The Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) was duly discovered and removed for a controlled explosion in a local field.
The woodland on the outskirts of Mansfield, including Rufford Forest, was used throughout WWI for military training and such relics are often found with the increasing encroachment of residential and commercial properties onto once rural land.
