WWII Mortar Found in Lancashire Field

Crater from the controlled explosion

A controlled explosion has been undertaken after a WWII-era mortar was found in a field near Newton-in-Bowland, Lancashire. The device was moved to a nearby farm where it was inspected by an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team.

The EOD team transported back into the field where they carried out the controlled explosion. Regularly used for military training during WWII, mortars are a relatively common find in the UK, with the one in question purportedly dating to 1942.
