WWII Mortar Found on Culver Down

A suspected WWII-era mortar has been destroyed in a controlled explosion after being discovered on Culver Down near Sandown Bay on the Isle of Wight.

An Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was mobilised from the mainland to deal with the device.

Culver Down is the site of Culver Battery, one of the Palmerston Forts established in the 19th century to ward off a mythical French invasion. It was upgraded to be operational during WWI and WWII.

The wide open downland surrounding the fort was used for military training during wartime.
