Workmen unearthed a suspected WWII shell at a recreation ground in Hounslow, causing major road closures that caused traffic chaos in the surrounding area.
Fortunately, an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was quickly mobilised and the device was removed soon after discovery once ‘made safe’. The exact type of shell is unknown but given the proliferation of Anti-Aircraft (AA) guns in London during WWII, it is potentially a remnant of a misfire from one of these large batteries.
