A World War Two (WWII) torpedo made an appearance on Slapton Sands in Devon, prompting the mobilisation of an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team. Members of the public had found the device washed up on the beach and informed the Coastguard.
A Royal Navy EOD team assessed the 4-5 foot torpedo and decided it was safer to destroy it a controlled explosion.
Slapton Sands was a major training area for Allied forces in the build-up to D-Day. Numerous munitions have been found on the beaches in recent years, though few quite so hefty!
