An Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team carried out a controlled explosion after the discovery of an anti-invasion mine on Shanklin beach.
The Coastguard had initially been informed of the suspect find and called in an EOD team from the Royal Navy for a closer inspection. The EOD team decided that the mine needed to be made safe in situ.
Such mines are not commonly found nowadays after considerable efforts were made in the post-war years to clear beaches of remnant ordnance.
