Suspected Spigot Mortar Found Near Peterborough

A controlled explosion was carried out in the Eye area of Cambridgeshire after the discovery of a suspected World War Two spigot mortar by magnet fishermen.

The device – a common weapon of the Home Guard during the war – was pulled out of the River Nene at Peterborough Embankment, resulting in Police being called to the scene. They subsequently mobilised an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team who removed the device for safe detonation nearby.
