Unexploded WWII Mortar Rounds Found on Beach in Essex

A controlled explosion was carried out on 18/12/2023 after 3No. live WWII mortar rounds were discovered on a beach in east Essex.

The Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) was found by a member of the public walking the beach at Walton-on-the Naze. The devices were safely destroyed at the scene by an Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, after a 100m cordon on the beach was secured by the local police and coastguard.

The Home Guard are known to have used the Naze for training during WWII.
